Since this is my first real post on my new blog, I figured I’d start with something that actually matters to me: trying to understand what “healthy eating” even means anymore.

So, I’ve been digging into this whole “heart‑healthy eating” thing, and it turns out a lot of what we’ve all been told for years might be missing the point. I always thought it was about cutting carbs, ditching potatoes, avoiding pasta, or going low‑fat. Apparently… not so much.

A huge long-term study — we’re talking almost 200,000 people over about 30 years — found something pretty simple: it’s not really about how much fat or carbs you eat. It’s about the quality of the food you’re putting in your body.

So yeah, you can be “low‑fat” or “low‑carb” and still be eating junk.

What the researchers noticed was that people who ate more whole foods — things like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats — ended up with better heart health overall. They had higher levels of the “good” cholesterol, lower inflammation, and a lower risk of heart disease. And this held true whether they were low‑carb or low‑fat.

The diets that didn’t do so well were the ones full of processed stuff, too much animal fat, or just not enough real nutrients. Basically, if your “diet” is just cutting things out but not adding anything good in, your heart isn’t impressed.

One of the researchers put it pretty bluntly: it’s not about the carb‑cutting or fat‑cutting by itself. It’s about the quality of the food choices you make while doing it.

What I like about this is that it takes the pressure off all the strict rules. You don’t have to count every carb or obsess over calories. You just have to eat more real food and less processed junk. That’s something normal humans can actually do.

Now, to be fair, the people in the study were all health professionals, so they probably had better habits and access to care than the average person. But the study ran for over 5 million person‑years (yes, that’s a real measurement), so the data is still pretty solid.

The big takeaway for me — and honestly, this is why I wanted this to be my first real blog post — is that healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need to follow some extreme diet or punish yourself. Just choose better ingredients more often than not.

Whole foods. Less processed stuff. A little common sense.

If this is the direction nutrition science is heading, I’m here for it.

I’m planning to explore more stuff like this as I go, so this feels like a good place to start.

If you want to check out the actual study, it was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Are you wondering why the world is in so much chaos? Does it feel like we are on the brink of a civil war? Are you wondering why we can't get along? Are you frustrated with the endless bickering between Republicans and Democrats?

Corona virus isn't to blame. The problem isn't our failure to elect the right person. Look in the mirror. We are to blame. We are the cause of our own problems. Fortunately, we are also the solution. We can bring about a much more free, peaceful, and virtuous world where people live in harmony and celebrate differences. I'm not pushing any religious views on you. People of faith and people of no faith can peacefully coexist just fine. So can all reasonable people; regardless of skin color, sexual orientation, or even economic status. We don't need to have an endless struggle with each other. It needs to end immediately. I'm suggesting one critically important principle to you: Live and Let Live. Can you get on board with this idea?

Can you truly accept that competent adults have the right to peacefully live their lives as they choose; even if they choose to live in ways you morally disagree with? Or, ways that are unhealthy? Or, unwise? All we need to do is simply agree to Live and Let Live. Does this seem too simple and naive?

To the extent we have allowed others to peacefully live their lives as they choose, freedom and peace have resulted. Prosperity follows freedom and peace. We urgently need to unite around the principle that initiating aggression, even to achieve laudable goals, is always wrong. All laws should reflect this basic principle. Without first agreeing upon this basic principle, arguing about anything else is a waste of time. I'm not advocating pacificism. Reasonable self-defense is a response to aggression; not aggression itself. If we truly believe all people ought to have equal rights, we need a Movement that has such a principle as the anchor of its philosophy. Let's commit to aspirational values such as tolerance, open mindedness, voluntary kindness, rational thought, honesty, civility and a commitment to pursuing truth.

We must recognize that in order for you to live the life you want in peace and freedom you must extend that same right to your neighbor. Your right to pursue your life as you choose cannot infringe upon another's to do the same. If we all adhere to this simple truth, we can live in a free and prosperous society where human happiness is maximized and suffering is minimized. It's that simple. We must oppose all forms of initiated aggression if we are ever to achieve a peaceful world. We can solve our problems within this pro-peace framework.I challenge you to seriously envision a world where all laws are consistent with the Live and Let Live Principle. Intrigued?

Everyone ought to know by now that mankind is destroying the earth. Most people in America have heard all the arguments about this, all the reasons why, along with many facts and figures describing the damage. Some people try to have hope while others are hopeless. Then there are many who just don't seem to care.

The earth is our home. We were made from it and we are sustained by it. We are deeply moved by its mysterious beauty and we are destroying it.

What is wrong with us? Who isn't guilty? We were given the earth as a home. One look at it's beauty and abundance reveals the love of our Creator. We as humans are expected to respond with love and take proper care of the earth and one another.

Over 2700 years ago someone prophesied saying:
The earth is polluted by its inhabitants; for they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore a curse devours the earth and those who live in it are held guilty. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned and few men are left. (Isaiah 24:5-6)

I wanted to take a moment to provide my thoughts about this blog, as well as the developer. This blog started out on a small scale and has turned out to be a full fledged blog with many bells and whistles. There have been many trials and errors but the developer (Terry) persevered and it has now evolved into what it is today. Another purpose for this post is to experience first hand how to post an article on someone else's blog. You have to admit that is not the usual way a blog site is run. Just another reason to give this a try. This last part is aimed at Terry himself...I wonder if the Latest Topics list in the right hand panel could be set up as a drop down list? I believe that it would make the panel seem "tighter" and prevent the need to scroll down to see what else is in the panel. Keep in mind this is an opinion and may not even be possible as I don't have the coding skills needed to determine the viability of doing so. Congratulations on a great looking blog.

It isn't easy being a loner. Someone who resists the pull of the crowd, who marches to their own drummer. But loners exist across the natural world, and they might just serve a purpose, said Corina Tarnita, an associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. She ticked off examples of loners who sit out their species, collective actions: the small herd that skips the great wildebeest migration, the locusts that peel off from the swarm and revert to calm grasshopper behaviors, the handful of bamboo that flower a few days before or after the rest of the species, and the slime molds that hang back from forming the swaying towers studied by Princeton luminary John Bonner.

Now that we're starting to look for it, we realize that a whole lot of systems are not perfectly synchronized and it's tantalizing to think that that there may be something to this imperfect synchronization, Tarnita said. Individuals that are out-of-sync with the majority of a population exist in humans, too. We call them misfits or geniuses, contrarians or visionaries, very much depending on how the rest of the society feels about their behavior, but they certainly exist.
